The work included optical measurements (spectral albedo) and observations of related physical and textural properties, both on land and on fjord fast ice.
The winter 2006/2007 was, as the winter before, characterized by very little fast ice at the Western coast of Svalbard, compared with earlier years since the 1990s.
This Thorpex fieldwork is linked to other research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway (Black Carbon, MariClim, in the programme Norklima), and to the longterm Kongsfjorden fast ice monitoring programme of the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI). The fieldwork was done by Børge Hamre (Univ. Bergen) and Sebastian Gerland (NPI).
