Work packages:

The Norwegian IPY-THORPEX is divided into 6 workpackages (WPs).

WP 1: Field experiments and data handling

Objective: To collect detailed, high-quality observations related to adverse weather, for assimilation into models and validation of model output.

WP 2: The physics and dynamics of Arctic weather extremes

Objective: Improved understanding, modelling and forecasting of mesoscale Arctic weather extremes.

WP 3: Parameterization of physical processes connected to arctic clouds and seaice

Objective: To improve the treatment of cloud-radiation-sea-ice interactions in radiative transfer models for the Arctic.

WP 4: The synoptic influence on mesoscale Arctic weather extremes

Objective: To find out how past, present and future synoptic weather and climate conditions influence meso-scale extreme weather from Arctic fronts to polar lows.

WP 5: Operational modelling capability of adverse Arctic weather

Objective: To significantly improve forecasting skill of extreme weather events in the Arctic by: assimilation of new satellite and weather radar data; adopting improved process parameterizations from other WPs in the project; and using a high resolution ensemble prediction system (LAMEPS).

WP 6: International co-ordination of IPY-Thorpex

Objective: To co-ordinate the international THORPEX-IPY cluster.
